Vaka Raven in Bronze and Garnet Gemstones

$170.00

Vaka : "aware / watch" in Old Norse.

READY TO SHIP.

The Vaka Raven is taken from an old painting sketchbook of mine and hand forged into recycled molten sterling and fine silver. This version is done in bronze which has been patina darkened and sanded for an old treasure vibe. Three round 6mm garnet gemstones rest along the Vaka Raven almost as a neck collar. Two Elder Futhark Dagaz runes are etched on each wing. Dagaz represents dawn or an awakening. Comes on a dark sterling 18" chain. If you need a different chain length please ask before purchasing!

These feature Elder Futhark runes - so far thought to be the oldest form of runes discovered. Runes were used by ancient Germanic speaking peoples and have become popularly known as "Viking" runes. While much of their actual history and translation is debated, the runes have one common myth in ancient Norse lore that has been patched together by using two different sagas (mainly). In summation, the god Odin is attributed with unlocking the knowledge of the runes. In a story called the Havamal, Odin is said to hang from a tree (possibly Yggdrasil, the Norse World tree) for 9 nights until he in a way earns the runes. Runes are said to posses magical properties. They imbue the one who wears them or the item them are on with what they represent. In the old days, they would be carved into weapons or jewelry.

As always comes sweetly packaged in a jewelry box ready for gift giving.
